Welcome to Mayberry
Mt. Airy, North Carolina, affectionately known as Mayberry RFD, is the childhood home of icon Andy Griffith. Walking through Main Street transports you back to the days when Andy lived here and you can easily see the connection to the town from his popular TV show.
In addition to the nostalgia of days gone by, Mt. Airy is a great base to explore natural sites like the Blue Ridge Parkway or Pilot Mountain. You can also visit the Yadkin Valley wine region and tour one or more of the wineries located nearby. Whether you come for a porkchop sandwich at Snappy Lunch, to enjoy some shopping in the quaint stores, or just to enjoy the beautiful mountain area, there is something for everyone in Mt. Airy. |
Cousin Emma's, a one-story, Queen Anne style house boasting four gables is located just one short block (with a level walk) from the popular downtown stores and restaurants and is just three doors down from some of Mt. Airy's must-see attractions: Squad Car Tours, Wally's Service Station, Emmett's Fix'it Shop, the Courthouse and Jail, with numerous vintage vehicles parked outside.
It is furnished with her family's antiques, including authentic Oriental rugs and unique pieces from her extensive travels abroad. The twelve-foot ceilings provide a roomy and welcoming atmosphere. After your full day of seeing the sights you can enjoy a good night's sleep and plenty of 'you' time to relax, daydream, and replenish your spirit.
The property also has a quaint one-room cabin inside the picketed backyard fence that is graced with a huge, ancient Lacy Em tree, reputed to be over 200 years old. Legend has it that the main house itself was one of the 'safe stops' for the famous underground railroad. The Mt. Airy Granite basement with its high ceilings certainly could have housed several individuals as they made their trek north to freedom. It was also once used as the general area's meeting place and probable parsonage for the area Friends Church until a lovely old church was built three doors down in the 1890s.
Mt. Airy and the surrounding area is the home of a thriving art community. Cousin Emma supports these local artists by displaying their work, with many of the items available for purchase.
